The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration will reconstruct the road along Abehe Street, behind Oba Market at Ogbe Quarters in Benin City, in honour of late Hon. Sunny Uyigue who died at the age of 86 years.
He gave the assurance at the funeral service of late Sunny Uyigue.
Obaseki said the late Sunny Aiguobarueghian Uyigue was a fine politician of Edo South extraction who contributed his quota to the development of the state.
“We are here this morning to bid final farewell to a great man, especially those of us from Edo South for his contributions in politics and to our lives as a people. While seeking for governorship, I went to him for his prayers and he prayed for me and wished me well in my political journey.
“This morning we should thank God for his life. Thank God I am here myself this morning. I never knew there was a church here as I have passed through here several times. Coming here this morning to see the state of the road to the church, one thing I can do in his honour is to ensure the road is tarred.
“His passing marks a transition to another generation of politicians from our zone and we must take the core lessons of his life knowing that we are in politics to serve the people not to acquire wealth for ourselves.”
Obaseki said that the late Sunny Uyigue was a man that stayed with the people despite his achievements in politics, noting, “Politics is all about service and improving the lives of the people. You can't be a rich man from politics but you can become a great man serving the people through politics.
In his sermon, “The Promise of the unchangeable Lord, Jesus Christ”, the presiding lead Pastor, Abehe Baptist Church, Pastor Friday Ekhator reading from the scriptures John 14:1-18; Rev. 21:23-27 said late Sunny Uyigue during his life made remarkable impacts, urging Christians to follow his exemplary life of service, humility, dedication and commitment to the things of God's work.
Pastor Ekhator commended Governor Obaseki for his developmental strides in repositioning the state and making it an investors’ destination.
“The church is thanking you for your good heart to work for Edo people. You don't make noise or waste the peoples resources in broadcasting your achievements despite achieving greatly for the people. You have done your best to improve the lives of Edo people by ensuring peoples oriented projects. You have tried for Edo people and the church will follow you especially as we match closer to the 2023 presidential election.”
The Executive President, Edo Baptist Conference Rev. Osahon Igbinidu commended the governor of Edo State for the peace and security of lives and properties under Godwin Obaseki's led administration.
“Edo State is secured to a very large extent because we have a governor who is concerned about our lives and security. We have had a series of security meetings that focused on a peaceful and secured state, and that we are achieving under Obaseki's administration. The church is happy with your efforts so far in securing the state and making it safe for all of us,” he said.
In her tribute, the first daughter of late Sunny Uyigue, Eki Uyigue Redd, described her father as a hero.
