It is with a heavy heart that I mourn the passing of one of Nigeria’s most distinguished medical practitioners and gynaecologists, an illustrious son of our dear Edo State, and accomplished philanthropist, Dr. Henry Omorogieva Akpata, who passed at the age of 84.
A man of unparalleled energy and accomplishments, Dr. Akpata was a dedicated and thorough-bred professional who consistently upheld the highest standards of integrity and professionalism throughout his career; a trait that endeared him to all who had the privilege of working with him.
He was intelligent, courageous, industrious and lived an exemplary, purposeful and selfless life. Having qualified as a doctor in Germany in 1973, he distinguished himself in the medical world, bringing a peculiar flair and passion that set him apart from his contemporaries. Dr. Akpata was reputed to have worked in 35 hospitals and treated over 15,000 gynaecological patients for a period of time.
A gentleman of no mean disrepute, his knack for excellence stood him out and made him a standard bearer. He embodied the hard work, perseverance, dexterity and acumen that espoused his Edo heritage.
He was a source of support and inspiration to many and was always available to provide guidance and direction to all who sought his advice.
The late Dr. Akpata was a great family man and a compassionate father, who raised his children, including the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata to strive for excellence and honour.
He will be fondly remembered for his wit, candour, an undying love for family and community and a rare knack for excellence. He will be sorely missed
I commiserate with his son, Olumide Akpata, the entire Akpata family, friends and associates of our departed brother and father, and pray that God will grant all the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki, Governor, Edo State (2016-2024)
