The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Obehi Akoria, has said the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led state government is building the first and only hydrotherapy facility in South-South Nigeria at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, in Benin City.
The commissioner disclosed this during an inspection of the revamp of the hospital by Governor Obaseki and other officials of the state government.
She noted that the governor is committed to making Edo a destination for medical tourism in Nigeria.
According to her, “The Governor Obaseki-led administration is revamping the health sector and making it a destination for medical tourism.
"We have built an Out-Patient Department that will provide high-end services in ear, nose, and throats, neurology, endocrinology, dental services, antenatal and other related services, as well as physiotherapy. This is the only hydrotherapy facility in the South-South region of Nigeria.”
Prof. Akoria added: "The In-Patient Department has also been upgraded so that rather than being an open ward, we now have en-suite wards so that people have more privacy. There will be a way to monitor all the patients, ensuring their experience becomes better than what it used to be.”
Noting that the hospital will have top-of-the-range laboratories for tests and investigations to enable it to compete with the best across the globe, she said: "We will have a new set of laboratories that will cover hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, anatomic pathology, and others. Outside that, we are looking to have an administrative block that did not exist before and it will be connected to the In-Patient Department.
"We will be dealing with hypertension and its various complications as well as kidney disease, stroke, brain and spinal cord issues. Others include ear, throat and neck services, and female and male reproductive services.”
