The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government will continue to advance programmes and policies to promote inclusion and social justice, ensuring that every citizen, irrespective of gender, religion, social class, or background is adequately empowered to realize their fullest potential.

Obaseki gave the assurance in commemoration of the 2023 World Day for Social Justice marked by the United Nations and other sister organizations, with the theme, “Overcoming Barriers and Unleashing Opportunities for Social Justice.”

According to the governor, “As we mark the 2023 World Day of Social Justice, we are reminded of the critical role that social justice plays in promoting peace, prosperity, and the overall well-being of our communities. This day also provides us with a fine opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of social justice and to creating a world that is fair, inclusive, and equitable for all."

“As a government, we recognize that social justice is not a luxury but a fundamental human right. We remain committed to promoting policies and initiatives that advance social justice, ensuring inclusive and equal access to health services, education, and employment opportunities, among others. We will continue to sustain efforts in this regard, pursuing programmes and policies to guarantee that our people, irrespective of their beliefs, gender, or social class are provided with the right skills and environment to thrive and live life to the fullest.”

Speaking on the need for citizens to vote for only qualified, credible, and competent leaders in Saturday’s general election, Obaseki noted, “The rising tension in some parts of the world is largely linked to the perceived and actual imbalance in the distribution of social, economic and political opportunities, fueled by man-made barriers such as class, race or gender. All of this is put to check when social justice is enforced and adhered to.

“This makes it imperative that we elect only leaders who are committed to promoting social justice and equality for all. We must put this into consideration as we go out on Saturday to cast our votes.”

The governor further charged, “As citizens, we must demand that our political leaders prioritize social justice issues such as poverty reduction, access to education and healthcare, and the protection of human rights. We must ensure that our elected officials uphold these values and are held accountable for their actions.”
