The Chairman, Edo State Economic and Strategy Team Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki has said, if elected as governor of Edo State he would place emphasis on women empowerment and participation in the governance of the party. It is from such initiatives and processes that people are recruited to fill government positions. He made the statement at an event organized by the leadership of the women’s wing of the All Progressive Congress APC, Edo State chapter. The event was organized for women of the party and included delegates who are women in the party. It was an opportunity for them to interact with the party gubernatorial aspirants for the forthcoming governorship election scheduled to hold 10th September, 2016.
He stated that women have been marginalized; short changed and have not been given an opportunity in spite of the fact that they represent about 60% of our population.
He further added that for women to achieve this feat, they must first be politically empowered, followed with social, cultural and economic equality. This is achievable by ensuring that women are educated properly. According to him “We have to start empowering our women from the political process and what I intend to do as governor is to make sure that at the party level, we stop this attitude of thinking our women can only participate as women leader, women must participate like any other person so that the executive at every ward, LGA and state level you have more women participating in it”. “For me, it is not enough to talk of women empowerment, we have to start now to empower women by first encouraging them to get educated and secondly, give them social, cultural and economic equality”. He stated.
He promised to make sure that women are fully represented in his government if elected Governor of the state.
Among the aspirants that participated in the event were, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere, Com. Peter Esele, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Dr. Pedro Obaseki, Mrs. Tina Agbarah.
