Jubilation in Edo as LG workers receive salary arrears

Local Government Council workers across Edo State have heaved a sigh of relief after the State Government settled arrears of salary owed them.

Investigations revealed that the workers received alerts indicating payment for six months out of ten months arrears in some cases, while others got as many as seven months’ pay.

It would be recalled that the backlog of salary arrears had brewed dissonance between the local government employees and their Chairmen.

However, last week, Edo State government embarked on the payment of local government workers salary, while it was gathered that this was made possible by the application for the Paris Refund allocation accrued to the state in the first tranche.

Employees across the 18 LGAs of the state expressed joy at the governor’s decision to settle the salary arrears.

Although, suspecting that the funds for settling the arrears were made available by the Paris Club Refund, some regretted that the money from the refund would go into repaying debts. They were, however, full of thanks to the governor whose intervention, according to them, would enable them lead their normal lives again economically.

In addition, they expressed faith in the governor’s commitment to the task of paying up, as soon as possible, the remaining four months they were owed, and based this on the fact that it did not take them any public demonstration to prod the governor into action.

Some adjudged the gesture as a manifestation of genuine commitment to the ideals of governance.

Ozaveshe Gadimoh, an Akoko-Edo LGA staff in Igarra disclosed that he received the bank alert for the payment on Thursday last week.

Speaking further, he explained that information he gathered from reliable quarters within the secretariat had it that Governor Obaseki decided to set aside some of the Paris Club refund for intervention in LGA staff arrears.

Another employee, Eneze David, also confirmed receipt of the bank alert and suspected the utilisation of the Paris Club Refund as the force behind the decision.

It would be recalled that the state government had made it clear that the allocations for LGAs had always been made available to them as at when due.
