Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe - Commissioner for Education

Oviawe is an international policy and development specialist with over eleven years of community development and cross-cultural collaborative experience.

She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education, and has expertise in education, fundraising and program development, which spans four continents.

Until her appointment as commissioner, Oviawe served as Executive Chairperson of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), spearheading widespread reforms in the basic education sub-sector under the framework of EdoBEST (Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation).

She is the Founder of the Africa Special Interest Group (ASIG) of the Comparative and International Education Society, a vibrant research and practice network of academics, practitioners, policymakers and graduate students in over 15 countries.

Oviawe is a member of the Working Group on global e-learning of the World Congress of Comparative Education Societies.
