A group, Igbanke National Progressives Association has described wife of the Edo State Governor-elect, Mrs Betsy Obaseki as a beacon of hope for women.
A statement by the Group’s Convener, Mrs. Gloria Adagbon said, “on November 12, 2016, power will change hands and a new governor of Edo state will be sworn into office. Simultaneously, Edo women will be welcoming a New First Lady, Mrs Betsy Obaseki whom many say is the next best thing to happen to Edo state”.
“Mrs Obaseki like her husband, is a technocrat and financial expert who has had a very successful career. She is the Managing Director BOI Investment and Trust Company Ltd, a subsidiary of the Bank of Industry. Her incredible financial expertise is what many say would be key in addressing the challenges facing Edo women and no doubt be effective in the management of the various women empowerment programmes that will be rolled out for Edo women.
During the campaign period, Mrs Obaseki bonded easily with Edo women and identified directly with their concerns. Furthermore, she knows exactly how to approach women issues in order to foster women inclusion, advancement and empowerment.
“As First Lady with such professional background and strategic mindset, the agenda for women in business, women in politics, and women in governance will be accorded the highest priority especially as the Godwin Obaseki administration is keen to enhance active women participation in governance and provide an enabling environment for Edo women to thrive.
“Little wonder that Edo women opted for Betsy, instead of Mrs Idia Osagie Ize-Iyamu, her excellent track record, sincerity of purpose and a golden heart to serve Edo women are remarkable.
“The people knew that Continuity, Consolidation and Improvement of existing programmes aimed at women is critical to ensuring that Edo women are fully engaged to contribute their quota in governance, which undoubtedly will improve the economic growth and development of the state.
“Edo women are excited and at the same time highly expectant to see Mrs Obaseki assume the role of First Lady as they have great confidence in her to provide the platform to achieve the inclusion of women while at the same time addressing the challenges facing the girl child.
“It is certainly a new dawn for Edo women as the Obasekis become the first citizens of the state. Edo women are hopeful as it is rare to find such leadership who are well grounded to preside over their affairs. In Betsy Obaseki, Edo women see a beacon of hope”, Mrs. Adagbon said.
